The MSDMM program centers on the practical application of knowledge through its signature Digital Media Capstone Project, a cornerstone of the student experience. Introduced in the first course and refined throughout the program, students design a digital media initiative or project with real-world relevance that aligns with their professional aspirations. By integrating academic theory with professional practice, the Capstone journey equips students with skills in project management, content production, digital marketing strategies, and more.
This hands-on approach ensures graduates leave with a portfolio-ready deliverable that highlights their expertise and demonstrates their ability to creatively and effectively tackle industry needs. Students are supported and encouraged to develop their capstone projects in partnership with industry mentors and organizations, cultivating meaningful industry relationships during their DMM journey.

“My main goal for my Capstone was to increase access to free soccer in San Diego. I originally planned to create an application for people to use to sign up for games in these different communities. Then, after a year of spending time in the communities, playing, and talking to players and organizers, I changed my plan to focus on telling stories in the community. So, at the end of August 2024, after completing the program, I began the Urban Football Instagram page.”

“We were doing market research [for a class] and had to pick a digital media platform and study it from beginning to end. Who is the audience? How does the platform engage with audiences through marketing and advertising? And I picked Rover, which is a dog walking/dog sitting app because I love dogs, and I use Rover. My professors encouraged me to run with that idea for my capstone and that helped me come up with the idea for The Paw Print, which is an online publication dedicated to providing dog parents with insights about dog health and wellness.”
