James Lee is a lecturer in the USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism, where his work explores the intersections of art, persuasion, popular culture, and media technologies. He focuses on how creative labor and community function on digital platforms, with particular attention to comics, including their production, circulation, and evolving use by audiences in memes and other participatory forms. Lee integrates hands-on creative practice into his research and teaching, using media-making to inform his studies of digital culture. He encourages students to critically and creatively engage with digital media, connecting theory to practice in his courses.

Lee earned a BA from the University of California, Santa Barbara, an MA from Columbia University, and an additional MA and PhD in communication from USC Annenberg.
